"The first rule of Fight Club...

... is you do not talk about Fight Club." Sorry, Tyler, but I have a carnal need to yap about my interests. Fight Club is a 1999 film based off a book of the same name written by Chuck Palahniuk. The story revolved around the Narrator (played by Edward Norton) and Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt) as they inadvertantly create a club that satiates the primal instincts of men. Throughout the entire movie, Tyler urges the Narrator to hit rock bottom, to reject life as a consumer. He does this by moving in with Tyler into his dilapidated home after his own apartment explodes. The Narrator balances Fight Club, his work life, and his relationship with a girl named Marla Singer (played by Helena Bonham Carter) throughout the first half of the movie.

Slowly, the Narrator makes his way to rock bottom, following Tyler along in his journey of recruiting new members of this elusive "Project Mayhem." But once the Narrator realized the extent of Tyler's plans, it's too late. Once the Narrator realises that he and Tyler are (spoilerz!!) the same person, he attempts to stop his plan to blow up all major credit card companies. In the end, the Narrator fails, and can only watch with Marla as the buildings crumble to the ground, but not before shooting himself in the cheek, "killing" Tyler Durden.

The OG Selfshipping

So Tyler and the Narrator are the same person. With this information, an important question is raised: how does this affect the ship? In my humble opinion, it doesn't. Listen-- I don't blame the Narrator for basically imagining a man who he lives with and tussles around naked with. I get it, I really do. But we can't deny that manifesting Brad Pitt in those slutty ass outfits is 100% hetero behavior. The Narrator was whipped for Tyler, we know this.

On a more serious and media literate note, I think the Narrator and Tyler's relationship is one of a closeted gay man living in the 90's. The Narrator, who can be read as gay and closeted/repressed, created Tyler as an ideal (straight) version of himself. "I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, and I am free in all the ways that you are not." Even when the Narrator was having sex with Marla, it was detatched, through the eyes of Tyler. Which is why I think the Narrator should've fucked Tyler instead.
